Below are some pictures that we took on our recent museum visit. Many of them are student photos since Mr Payne forgot his camera. Cool that we are able to go to the museum and also bring back photos. Leave us a comment about why you chose that painting to photograph. We’d love to hear what you think.
Students, leave at least 2 comments about the works of art you saw that you enjoyed the most. Name the artists and the titles of the art, and also explain several things you learned about them from your docent. You may also tell us what you saw in the art. Make each comment detailed and at least a paragragh long. Below is a link to the Amon Carter Art Museum if you need a refresher.

I liked a dash for the timber by Fredrick Remmington because it showed complementary colors and it looked like it was coming right at you. And I also liked the Indian Hunter and the Pronghorn Antelope because of the way it showed the hunter kneeled down shooting the antelope

I liked the Dash for the Timber by Fredrick Remminton.
The painting had complementary colors and it looked like it popped out at you. It was also a large painting.
Also I liked the painting Wrapping Oranges. I liked this painting because it looked like a photograph. Also the way they painted the folds was very neat.
#3 by Brynda R on January 31, 2012 - 8:08 am
the painting Wrapping Oranges reminds me of years long ago when the people used to wrap oranges to keep them fresh.
the Dash for the Timber it used complemantry colors and cowboys are trying to get away from indians and they are in the middle of nowhere so, they must dash for the trees. if they do, they dont have a better chance of getting killed.

I really liked the abstract painting of the human body called “Figure”. It was painted by Morton Schamberg in 1913.The reason I really liked it was it was very unique and very colorful! It had an very bright and colorful presentation.
I also liked the portrait painting of Alice Vanderbilt Shepard from when she was 13. It was painted by John Singer Sargent in 1888. I really liked listing about the history of the painting and i loved the emotion the picture showed.

Series1 No.1 O’keefe is a fantastic painting of an abstract drawing that almost looks like a wave of many colers but not exactly. She also painted a picture called White Birch that looks like a tree-flower mix, wich is also an abstract painting. They are my favorites because they show what kind of feelings that Georgia might have had when she was painting.
#6 by Lilly B. on January 31, 2012 - 8:22 am
I like the A Dash for the Timber by Frederic Remington because there is a lot of action in the painting. The horses are also look like they are running towards you.
I also like the Sunrise, Yosmite Valley by Albert Bierstadt because I like the way the lighting how it effects the whole painting. The another part i liked about it is the bears in the painting.
#7 by Tanner.S on January 31, 2012 - 8:22 am
The Hunters Return, By Thomas Cole -It was one of my favorite paintings because i’m a hunter and also that it had a ton of detail. It also had the four things that the Thomas Cole said you had to have in a landscape painting mountains ,body of water, forest, and mildness.
#8 by Lexi.S on January 31, 2012 - 8:23 am
I liked Alice Venderbrunt By: John Singer it showed alot of stuff of that peroid of time. She was 13 when they painted the picture . At first her mom did not want John S. to paint the picture because Alice hurt her back.
I also liked the wrapped the wrapped oranges by: Willam J. McCoskey it showed how they used to wrap the oranges in that peroid of time.
#9 by Cooper H on January 31, 2012 - 8:24 am
I like the painting A Dash for the Timbers because it is big and grabs your attention. The way the horses run it makes you think that it could come out of the painting. The way Frederic S. Remington does his dark and lights makes the painting look three dimentional.
I like Attention Company because the little boy acts just like a soldier. The painting is a nice size not to big not to small. When William M.Harnett paints he knows how to make it looke like the kid is really standing in front of you.
#10 by Leila on January 31, 2012 - 8:25 am
My favorite one was White Birch by Okeefe because it makes me feel happy with all the bright colors, it is a morning like theme and it uses alot of warm colors.
My other favorite one was Series 1. no. by the same artist Okeefe, I like this one cause it is also uses Bright colors witch makes me feel warm, it has a happy spirit amd she uses good details to show you that she really likes painting pictures in the morning.
#11 by briley on January 31, 2012 - 8:25 am
The painting done by.William M.Harnett were Washington chopped down his dads cherry tree. His painting popped out to me. He drew ever cherry perfect. He made people farther back smaller so they look like they are back farther back in the painting.

Blips and Ifs – Stuart Davis (1892-1964)
I like this painting because the colors in the back are dark so it makes all the rest of the colors stand out because the other colors are light and bright. I also like it because it looks like graffiti in a way.
Wrapped Oranges – William J. McCloskey (1859-1941)
I like this picture because I have never seen oranges wrapped. Another reason why I like it is because it looks so real. It also has the reflection.
#13 by Gage W. on January 31, 2012 - 8:28 am
I like Attention Company because it’s a nice size painting and grabs your attention. The way the little boy is playing like he is a soldier makes this a great painting. The way William.M.Harnett pulls the darks and makes the painting look great.
I like Indian Group because it is a group of indians just sitting there and looking up at other group of people. It looks like the two groups are about to go into battle. The way Charles Deas makes the indians stand out and makes it grab your attention.
#14 by Antonia D on January 31, 2012 - 8:31 am
Series1 No.1 by Georgia O’keefe is one of my favorite paintings, because it looks like a wave of warm colors and it makes me feel warm, calm, and safe.
Another painting I liked was White Birch, because I like how it showed a close up of the tree. They were both painted by O’keefe.
#15 by Brynda R on January 31, 2012 - 8:34 am
I like the Wrapping Oranges painted by william J. McCloskey. It reminds me of along time ago when people had to wrap oranges just to keep them fresh. But, now we keep them in a fridge.
Also the painting called Alice Vanderbilt Shepard was painted by John Singer Sargent. He also painted a picture of her mom but it is not kept in the Amon Carter Musem. Her mother John had ask to paint her while in New York, her mom said no because she was in a horible actidant. The painting would take a lot of standing straight, her mother finially said yes and thats how the painting came to be.

I think that Dash for the Timbers is a good painting it was made by Frederic S Remington. In the painting they are running to the woods or the timbers. Some guy’s are falling off there horse and some are shooting at the guy’s behind them.
Attention Company was made by William M Harnett is a painting of a poor boy.
acting like a soldier. And you can tell that he is poor becuase his clothes are old and ripped and he is using
a broom pole for a gun or something.

Cliffs of Green River, 1874- Thomas Moran, (1837-1926) I liked this painting because the cliffs look like they pop out .Thomas Moran uses darks and light to show how they stand out. You can see the reflections on the water.
Sunrise, Yosemite Valley 1870- Albert Bierstadt
(1830-1902) I liked this painting because the first thing you look at is the yellow sun light. The cliffs stand out and the trees have some yellow and dark on the other side. The thing I like the most is that the painting has a little bear.
#18 by briley on January 31, 2012 - 8:46 am
Thomas Moran (1837–1926) Cliffs of Green River, 1874. I liked the man walking thought the canyon. The way the sun hit him it caght my eye it was so cool how he drew it.

Thomas Moran (1837–1926) Cliffs of Green River, 1874 was my second favorite painting because it has amazing detail and it looks like it was a picture. and on the origanal picture there is a shadow of the lead man on a horse.

The museum was awesome and Dash for the Timbers was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!. There were a bunch of paintings that we saw but for some reason Dash For The Timbers got my attention more. All of the colors the shades made it look real. I was feeling like the next second I was going to get run over by the horses and maybe get shot.
I also liked the Atention Company. That poor boy looked sad. It was the best painting I have ever seen. He was pretending to be a soldier and had a broomstick as a gun.All the shades made him look real!!!. I think William M Harnett did a great job.
#21 by Cayden O'Neal on January 31, 2012 - 2:38 pm
I liked the white Birch because it was creative. I also liked it because it is beautiful. It has the color that I like. It isn’t realistic so it isfantastic

I liked the Wrapping Oranges painting by William J. Mcloskey! I liked how the colors complemented each other. It was a very textual painting ,and very colorful.I also liked how the artist used shading in the painting to show the curling of the wrapping paper on the oranges.
I also liked Attention Company by William M. Harnett. The boy looks very gloomy, and or sad. The little boy seems to playing soldiers. Because, he is using the large broomstick as a rifle gun. The colors complemented each other very well. I also liked how the artist used shading to show how the newspaper sailor’s hat crinkled and folded.

In Without Knocking is one of my favorites. Charles Russell created this painting. Shading brings out the action of these outlaws breaking in, obviously without knocking!
#24 by Mariah on January 31, 2012 - 2:46 pm
One of the great painting I saw was the portrait of Alice Vanderbilt Spepard. The best part about it was how they made her look like she was crying. She looked like a wealthy little girl, because of her clothes and her jacket. Her family owned a mansion multiple mansions. I liked that one because it looked realistic it looked like i was actully there standing right in front of me. I think the author John Singer Sargent was trying to make it look that way to create realism.
I also like selff portrait by Stuart Davis I think it was pretty intresting because, it reminded ome of somebody in a differnet shape and color the colors on there really brought out the protrait. It reminds me of a man standing in front of a frame and someone was taking a picture of him. I think the author took a picture and painted it different to make it look abstract but also make it regonizable.
#25 by Cayden on January 31, 2012 - 2:47 pm
I liked the white Birch because it was creative. I also liked it because it is beautiful. It has the color that I like. It isn’t realistic so it is fantastic. I also like the Attention Company. Because it was a good painting. ALso because it was realistic. It was a long time ago so it might be harder to get the paint and tools to make it.
#26 by Jake on January 31, 2012 - 2:48 pm
I liked “In without knocking” by Charles M. Russell because. I was intreging and the colors compliment each other.
I also liked Blips and Ifs by Frederic Church, Martin Johnson Heade, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and William Merritt Chase.
#27 by Payte T on January 31, 2012 - 2:49 pm
I like Dash for the Timbers the best because it had so musch action and looked very real. The artist did a good job making it look like the horses are about to jump out of the painting.
I also like Attention, Company! because the kid is pretending to be a soldier and the artist did a good job of making the kid look innocent. He also made the background darker than the child, so the child stands out more.
#28 by Felicia on January 31, 2012 - 2:49 pm
One of my favorite paintings were “The View from Eagle Rock.”I like this painting because it’s about nature and life, and I like the way he used the colors to show the season.
The painting called “The View from Eagle Rock” was painted by Sanford Robinson Gifford.
My second favorite painting was “Boston Harbor.” I like how he showed shading on the boats to show where the sun was located. The painting called “Boston Harbor” was painted by Fitz Henry Lane
#29 by Annie on January 31, 2012 - 2:50 pm
I really enjoyed the “Red Cannas” by George O’Keeffe. The color of bright red on the flower, is very
breathtaking. You can see the curves of the flower, and thats where the paint has been mixed to get darker.
I also really enjoyed “Cliffs of Green River” by Thomas Moran. His elaboration of lights and darks of colors is very unique. I think, in the painting, it looks like someone is leading a group of people. That, or the man in the front is running from the group of people behind him.
#30 by Tate S. on January 31, 2012 - 2:50 pm
I like Stuart Davis’ Blips and Ifs because it reminds me of a surfing style even though I have never had anything to do with surfing at all. I think it was very creative but I don’t see how anyone of the 1800′s/1900′s would make something like that. (But I think they have good taste!)
I also liked Alfred Jacob Miller’s Buffalo Hunt because the shading makes it look 3D. With the dust rising, you can tell that they are either in a drought at that time, or they have been working to kill the buffalo for a long time.
#31 by Brayden T. on January 31, 2012 - 2:52 pm
I liked the Attention Company painting at the muesuem it was meaningfull. Because he looked like a poor kid who didn’t have much but he had imagination. He was playing soldier using a soldiers suit a broomstick for the gun and a news paper for a hat. I think that William Harnett did a amazing job on his portrait
The Cliffs of Green River was an amazing portrait too. It looked so real because Thomas Moral used shading and to show where the light hit and didn’t hit. He did an excellant job on the horizon.
#32 by Mason I. W. on January 31, 2012 - 2:53 pm
In 1874, Cliffs of Green River was painted by the one Thomas Morran. This amazing masterpeice is quite oppisite of In Without Knocking. This painting is simply a peaceful landscape. Quite extrodinary!

I really enjoyed looking at the painting of Alice Vanderbilt Shepard by John Singer Sargent. Just by looking at the picture, I could see that it told a story. By looking at the painting, I could tell that she was probably wealthy by looking at the clothes that she was wearing in the picture.I could also tell that she was sitting down in the painting because I could see part of the chair in the background. Another painting that I liked was Cliffs of Green River by Thomas Moran. One thing that I really liked about this painting was that I could see the reflection of the person and the horse in the water. I also liked how the painter showed detail in the canyons in the background. Another thing that I liked about this painting was how the painter included nature in their painting.

I liked the “Attention Company!” painting. I found out that a guy named William M. Harnett made the painting. I also found out that it was made in 1878 and is a oil on canvas painting. I like it because it was real looking and the really neat shading on it was very good and the way you could sort of tell what year it could possibly be in.
I also liked “Red Cannas”.I found out that a woman named Georgia O’Keeffe made it and the painting is a oil on canvas. I also found out that the painting was made in 1927. I liked it because it was a very beautiful peice and the way Georgia made it look like it was zoomed in and all the detail she put in it. It was really intriguing.

My favorite sculpture was the free man because it symbolizes the freedom of the slaves. I thought that it was cool because it looked like the man was just releast from prison of some kind. The artist name was sculpted by Jhon Quince Adoms Ward.
My favorite painting was the Hunters Retern. It makes me feal like your comeing home from a long days work. But the thing that realy caught my attension was the setting sun.
This painting was painted by Thomas Cole and it is realy good.
#37 by Kevin on January 31, 2012 - 3:00 pm
i liked dash for the timbers. because it was made from oil pastels the dust that the horses made when running all of the colors looked like real live picture. I realized that the horses hooves were not on the ground.
I liked the picture alice vandebrites picture because it looked like a real picture. the artist took a picture of alice’s mom.
#38 by Desiree Y on January 31, 2012 - 3:00 pm
My favorite painting at the museum was Dash for the Timbers. I think it caught my attention the most, because it looked three-d. It really stud out from all of the other painting even though there was way more to pick from I like this one. It shows alot of shading and darks and lights. Also shows alot of details all over and there was no white space. I think Frederic S. Remington did a really good job on his painting.
Another painting that caught my eye was Blips and Ifs. I like it because it had alot of color and shapes. it represents New York witch is a really cool and pretty place to be. It shows that your painting doent have to be perfact to be in a museum. Stuart Davis has done a very well job on his painting.

I liked the Coming Through The Rye by Fredric Remington it was the best one I’v seen by him an dI’v seen a lot by him.
So that was my favorit one but not in the musem. I really like how me made it were the horse on the left was compleatly off the ground. I learned that when he made it took him like a whole year. But I’m not sure if that is correct but it is still cool.
#40 by Briley on January 31, 2012 - 3:01 pm
My favorite painting was Sunrise, Yosemite, Valley. By Albert Bierstadt because it shows variety of colors and showed darks and lights. It looked very real because it had uneven number of trees on each side and the painting had shading and made trees smaller as they got further back.
I also liked Attention company by William M. Harnett because the boy looks very serious like hes playing soldier and i like how hes not posing for the painting. Also the painting shows darks and lights to make the paintig look realistic.
#41 by Jake on January 31, 2012 - 3:04 pm
I liked “In without knocking” by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell because the colors complement each other. It also has a lot of action and it was a good painting. I also liked Blips and Ifs by Frederic Church, Martin Johnson Heade, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and William Merritt Chase because it was abstract and the colors compliment each other. It was also a very good painting.

A portrait that I really liked was White Birch by Georgia O’Keeffe. I learned that she went out on a lake early in the morning. When she painted this she was looking up to the tree, but in the painting it looks like you are looking in the center of the tree. I also learned that she didn’t show the texture of the tree. The colors were very peaceful and calm.
Another portrait that I liked was Cliffs of Green River by Thomas Moran. It showed great detail. The painting showed some action. The ground looked like it was photographed, also so did the river.
#43 by Reynaldo R. on January 31, 2012 - 3:06 pm
One of the best paintings of the Amon Carter Art Museum was Alice Vanderbilt. It was by John Singer Sarget. The thing that caught me was the artist made Alice really real by makeing the cheeks red like if see was crying and shaded the part that needed to be shaded. I also leared when Alice was sitting for the painting she had hurt her back and her mom was afraid that she would hurt her.
Another painting that I liked was The Hunter’s Returned it was made by Thomas Cole .I liked it because part of the forest was natural and the other half was all covered with plants and a wooden home and all slanted trees. I also that the artist put some small things that the viewer wouldn’t see and I also see why the artist named the The Hunter’s Revenge because two men were holding a deer.
#44 by Weston R on January 31, 2012 - 3:07 pm
I liked Dash for the Timber that was made by Frederic S Remington. I liked that none of the horses had thier hooves on the ground. I realized that one of the horses was going out of control and the guy who was on the horse was dead. I really liked the colors that they put in the painting. I liked how the guys were turned around and shooting at the other guys.
I also liked the Attention company. This painting was done by William M Harnett. The little boy looked sad and looked poor. I say he lookes poor because one of his button’s was different. I liked how the painter used shadeing to make the hat look like it was crumbled up a little.

The museum was a great experience one of the paintings I enjoyed was the White Birch by Georgia O’ Keffe. I loved all the bright warm colors, it reminded me of summer and I liked how she used her imagination on making the trunk of the tree have no texture. That made the tree the way she would want it to look.
The other painting I liked would have to be Sunrise, Yosemite Valley by Albert Bierstadt. I loved how the artist put a lot of detail in the sky. The artist also made it darker under the trees. Also I liked how there were no people in the painting it made the painting look more in nature I think both paintings were great.

The field trip was awesome on the painting i liked the William M. Harnett pantings the one with the Oil on canvas because it was very cerative and he looked like he was poor and it also looked liked he was playing something. I also liked the Georgia O’Keeffe series 1 because i liked the colors and it has alot of colorfull colors and it looked liked it was a wave.

I also liked A Dash For The Timber by Frederic Remington because I’v never seen that one before. I did learn some things about it like i did not know that one of the guyes was dead and one guy was holding the strap to the horse and another guy was holding the dead guy. I also found out that Frederic died in 1909 which I thought that he died in 1914. So i did have fun with that and I might go to the Amon Carter musem again.

I liked the painting “In Without Knocking” by: Charles Russell. It has a lot of action and detail it shows you that the horses are running and it is really cool and realistic.
