Miranda and Trey have a new debate: UIL rules say that students must pass all their classes in order to participate in sports, one-act play, cheerleading, and band competitions. Do you think this is a good idea? Miranda thinks it is a bad idea; Trey thinks it is a good idea. Post your thoughts and ideas. Who do you support on this debate?
Hey, it’s Trey. I’m on the side that you should be passing to play sports. I think it is a good way to motivate those who love to play sports but aren’t too interested in their grades. The purpose of school it to learn but we also want to have fun. If you do not need to pass to play sports then some kids would worry more about sports than their grades.
This is Miranda. My opinion about “Should you be passing to play sports?” is NO you shouldn’t!!! Yes, playing sports is a privilege but so is math if you like math. The reason is: what if you are new to the school and you have no friends, then you join sports and suddenly you have a million friends it feels like. Sports are what did keep my sister in school.
This is Halee and I agree with Trey. You should be passing before you can play any sports.Education comes before sports. Its a privlige to play any kind of sport. If you like sports then you will keep up your grades. So if you sont care about your grades than why should you play sports?
Halee, have you or ever someone you know ever came to a new school and didn’t know anybody well after school activites can help that. you can be passing to play, but you can’t be failing to play. school activities are so good to get know someone that you have no idea about!!!
i think its a good idea because if you think about it you will have to keep your grad up and to know you have to keep it up it easy to do
i think its stupied because you really wanna play but the coachs wont let u play because they will get fired BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i think its good that you have to keep your grades up to be in UIL things…
like i’m not passing one of my subjects…But i want to be a Dazzler(9th grade dancer)…i think it would be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUUUUTTTTT….
i’m trying to raise up that grade so i can tryout!!!!!!!
I totally agree with Trey. If you If your head is always on that activity, then you don’t think straight about school. Besides you would have more time for the needed tutorials. any way that is an earned privaledge.
I say that Miranda is right because it is a privilege to do sports for some people but to others it could be just like another class to them that they have to go though. “You know?” When i moved here in 4TH grade i tried out UIL and Imeet some of the people i Know today.
I agree with Trey on this one! Keeping students from playing sports, due to there grades, will teach them to try harder to succed. Students must learn from there mistakes, and learn from other students mistakes. The truth is that; if you love basketball, football, track, cheer, ect., you will try your hardest to acheive good grades. Making students pass to play is very smart. We all need to make good grades.
I think Trey is right you should have to be passing to play sports. After all if U! want to play sports when U! grow up U! need to have an EDUCATION. Playing sports is alright but U! need to know what the teachers are teaching to U! their taking their time to sit at a desk all day grading your papers long after school is ever. So if your to caught up in sports to pay attention the couch needs to sit your out till your learning comes first, or they need to K-I-C-K U!!!!! off the team right away.
Yes, you should be passing. Our goal as teachers and students is to make sure we are successful with everything we do. Students need to have high expectations for themselves.
I think you should be passing to play. My parents and teachers said I’d have to quit basketball since my grades went down to failing. They went up real quick after that because I wanted to play! I’m going with Trey on this one.
I think u shouldn’t be passing because, well everybody has to play a sport they like without having any work to play.
I agree with Trey u should be passing to play. Before, anything else the most important is education. Great Job Trey i’m Daniel! Would love to meet u someday because u always win in your debates
You should have to pass to play!
If you can’t do good or do your
work in school, why should you
get to do extra fun stuff with the
school.
If you aren’t passing you should
stay home && work on passing
instead of going to a game or meet.
&& if students feel you don’t have
to pass, they won’t. So, students
will stop trying && just fail with no
consequences!

I have to totally agree with Trey. Kids care more about sports and UIL activites right now but what happens to you when you graduate from college? you can play sports in school and some might even go pro, but colleges and the real world want people who are smart, and did not fail classes in school. if you fail you didnt try your best, and colleges and jobs require the best that you got. so why should you be able to play sports and not care about your grades when you graduate its all about what you know and have learned. kids should focus more on their grades and not sports so they can excel in life!
sorry miranda but i have to agree with treyyy!!!, i think it is a privlage to play sports , cause dont you think that all the students would be sleeping in class and not doing what they are suposed to be doing !! then they would still get to play i rhink that is wrong !! cause you need to know how to read ,write ,math !!!! and much moree!! cause you need to focus on school so , if you go to collage for sports then you will be able to cause you have good grades !!! you know what i meann !!!
=)
(butt this is only my opinon)
Hey this is Autumn and i have thought it over and i steel agree with Miranda. Some kids want to become pro and some of those kids arent successful in school. Sorry trey but i’m totally agreeing with miranda this time cant wait to here your new debate.
I agree with Trey because when you are passing your all of your classes, the class is easier for you because you are trying to understand the class.
I think that you should have to be passing to get on a sports team or other extracurricular activities because school should come first. If you decide to put the activity before school you will end up learning less and therefore not be successful later in life. Having to passing to participate will push you toward a more successful life whether the class will help you persue your career or not, and you might need to know the information later on (e.g. if your dream career fails). All the information in school is tought for a reason and you may need all of it later in life. This includes P.E. because you need to know how to take care of your body and stay fit!
Miranda, if ur not passing then u will b pushed TO pass so that you CAN participate in activities. if u arnt passing u should have 2! if ur not ur not letting teachers do their job. if u r really dedicated 2 an extracurricular activity then u willl pass so u can play it! I LOVE SCHOOL, SO DONT TELL ME THAT IT IS NOT IMPORTANT!!!
yes, i know there r errors
It’s school let the school dicid. Pass class play the the game. Don’t pass stay at home and STUDY!!!! You don’t pass then cry you not going to the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-About the blogs
No offense, but i thought this would change weekly. Also, dont tell people what ur going 4 untill some people have already blogged. That way they dont just agree with their friends.
U have 2 decide 4 urself someday and now is a good place to start. If ur not self-sufficient then u will nvr amount to much. Learning in school and getting ur own homework done will aid u along this path. U may need a teachers help, but it will pay off in the long-run!:) Extra-curricular activities look good on a college resume, but bad grades look horrible. The grades will overcome the activities and u might not make it. If ur not passing with grades over 90 then u cant b in NJHS, and NJHS looks spectacular on a college resume. It’s not our decision, though, but if u want to ruin ur future theres not a thing i can do about it. I can always try 2 guide u along the right path, instead. I hope this will help, and if it doesnt help u it might help another.
Miranda, if u r a new kid, yes, u need 2 make friends, but u also need to PASS TAKS SO U CAN STAY IN THE SAME GRADE AS UR FRIENDS (:D) AND GET TO HAVE FUN. IF U R HELD BACK U LOSE UR NEWLY-MADE FRIENDS AND HAVE 2 START ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
you all give good facts about your opinon. i know the rules and i get why. what if you try very hard and you just can’t pass. you try and you try but you cant seem to get it. should your team be let down. you can stay after school and study or you can really not lie about you doing your best and trying your hardest maybe in the long run your favorite activity might help you understand the (game plan)!!!!!
Jake,
Trust me on this getting held back when your new isn’t really that bad you usally keep your old friends and you get to make new ones. and if your in a sport and you study for a major grade test and you think you have it down and at the begining of the test your mind goes blank and you see you failed then what just let everybody on the team, squad, anything down even though you really did study!!
If all students who want to be professional athletes could be proffessional athletes and make huge salaries and be able to hire someone so honest that there is no way under heaven that that person would ever do anything wrong and so smart that the person would never make a mistake to do all the things they (the athlete) should have learned to do in school then maybe it wouldn’t matter whether or not one had to pass to play. However, that isn’t the world in which we live. You won’t all be professional athletes, sinlgers, actors, dancers or whatever else you aspire to. Some of you will just have to have “regular”jobs. Unless you have learned what we as teachers are trying to teach you, the best you can hope for is minimum wage. That isn’t enough to pay for a place to live, food to eat, and utilities let alone a car, movies, video games, furniture, etc. Even if all you want to do is sports, you need a plan B – something that will allow you to provide yourself and your familly with adequate housing, health care and all the other things families NEED. Having to pass to play can help you achieve plan B. In fact, 98% of the time plan B becomes the only plan. Learn now, play later.
I agree wit trey because it gave me a modivation 2 play plus i got out of MATH EARLY!!!! Woo!
Well i think you should be passing to play. You could have a kid that is working hard to keep their grades up just to play something they love and want to participate in. Then you could have some one who thinks nothing of their grades and are just playing sports to get out of school is not very fair. So i think you should HAVE to pass to be able to play…
Yeah Jake I have to agree with Miranda. bein the new kid isn’t all that bad. trust me when i say that because i have been the new kid in a school 19 times. even though i have never failed a grade i have never stayed in a school longer then a year.
